Appearance characteristics of Chinese and American snapping turtles

China-US plan The appearance characteristics of the snapping turtle
The Chinese and American snapping turtles

There are four snapping turtles in one male Subspecies include South American, Central American, North American and Florida snapping turtles, among which the Central American snapping turtle has the most depleted population. The carapace of the Chinese and American snapping turtles looks very domineering. The adult carapace can reach up to 45cm, making it a very large species.

The complete color of the Chinese and American snapping turtle (including the plastron, carapace and skin) is darker than that of the other three subspecies. The color of the carapace of the larvae ranges from dark gray to black, there are white spots on the carapace of the marginal shield, and there are white freckles on the plastron. There are two pairs of whisker-like protrusions on the lower jaw that are very special and conspicuous. Similar to the Buddhist snapping turtle, the spines on the neck and other skin are very conspicuous and thin. The head is broad and healthy, the upper part is flat and dark brown, and the muzzle is small and slender.

The carapace of the Chinese and American snapping turtles tends to be rectangular and has no obvious bulge. The third vertebral scute is the largest, accounting for 25% of the carapace length. The anterior segment of the plastron accounts for more than 40% of the length of the carapace. This turtle species looks more domineering than other subspecies on the surface, and it is the most populous turtle species among the four subspecies. The carapace base of the Chinese and American populations is black, while the carapace color of the Honduras population is brown and other colors are relatively dark.
